Daily Art Challenge Week Four Update

Last week I went on a little art supplies trip and picked up some new sketchbooks, among other things. I go through all my art supplies in the video below. It took me a few days to brave the new sketchbooks, but I did start with the little A6 Windsor and Newton book last week. I drew some cute line drawings of a girl with a sunflower. At the moment, I think the little line drawings in my book are the best pieces of work I am creating. But I’m struggling to find a style with colours that I really feel comfortable with. And I need to create coloured artwork as I love colour! The work I did on day 19 is probably my favourite for this week, followed by day 22. But most of my work I feel pretty ‘meh’ about. I guess I have only completed 4 weeks so far and need to give myself more time to experiment and make ugly art before I start finding my way a bit more.

Day 19 - 31/07/22

Day 19 I was using my cute little A6 sketchbook to draw more cute things today, and then I decided to turn one into a postcard design for today’s daily art. I created this one using a fine POSCA pen for the black outline and then filled it in using Ohuhu markers.

Once I coloured the oranges in, I wasn’t sure whether to add the blue background or not, so I took some pics before I did. What do you think? Do you like the full colour with a blue background or the white background with orange oranges?

I created two posts in one evening because, why not 🤷🏼‍♀️ how cute is this little smiling ladybird 🐞

Day 20 - 02/08/22

Day 20 of the art challenge and it’s another simple one using the greens, pink and red POSCA pens. I really love doing these simple colourful patterns as a fall back, when I’m tired or busy. I love that they don’t take much time, the colours look great and I can really get stuck straight in without worrying about creating a sketch first.

Last night my beautiful sister gave birth to her first child and I became an Aunty! 🥰 It was so exciting getting updates about what was going on and seeing the first pictures of him coming through. I stayed up waiting for him to be born so it was a late night for me. Hence the quick piece of art today! Such exciting times in my personal life so I’m going to have to learn to adapt and fit more in so I can spend time with family 😊 have a wonderful day!

Day 21 - 03/08/22

On day 21 of my daily art challenge, I thought I would try the same drawing in 2 different mediums. The bottom is a POSCA piece. I drew this first and was quite pleased with the outcome. It’s pretty simple, but it works. The top mushroom 🍄 is created using oil pastels annnnddd… I think I need to do some skillshare classes on how to use them because I feel like a child scribbling and making a mess.

The bits that come off the pastels go everywhere. I tried using a paintbrush to brush them away but still got smudges. I got it all over my hands, so there’s a lovely thumbprint on the page, and I have no idea what I’m doing with blending. I’m a work-in-progress artist. Curious about different mediums and giving everything a go. I can’t wait to look back and see my progress after a year. Hopefully, my work will be better than this 😂

Day 22 - 04/08/22

Day 22 I did this before getting out of bed this morning. Today is going to be the most special day for me as hopefully, I’ll be meeting my little nephew this afternoon. I wanted to make sure I had my daily art done so I can really enjoy the moment as long as it might last.

Doing some digital drawing for a change was great! And it was a fun challenge using a restricted colour palette in Procreate. It’s so tempting to use all the colours when they are right at your fingertips. I’m quite pleased with how this turned out to be honest.

Day 23 - 05/08/22

Day 23 ugh, I hate these. 3 attempts at creating a decent daily art piece, and none of them worked. I made these last night, but the lighting was poor to take a pic. Two of these are Ohuhu and one POSCA. My oranges look like turnips, my lemons look crap, and I had no idea how bad the two posca yellows looked together, and my posca pens are running out.

I did a bit of research last night on how to use my oil pastels, too and found out I have bought the worst ones, and they are not what the people I follow use on their mixed media pieces. I feel a little disheartened with my kid’s art supplies and my inability to create something I like at the moment. I have a basket of £100+ of art supplies on amazing waiting for me to save some more to buy them, and I keep adding to it 😂

Today I’m going to dedicate a bit more time to creating something, I’ll plan it out, sketch it properly and hopefully, it will make for something I’m proud of. I’ll also be filming the process, and I have nothing created yet for tomorrow’s YouTube video!

Day 24 - 06/06/22

Now, this is an exclusive. I haven’t even uploaded this one to Instagram yet! This was a piece I created today using gouache paints and a tiny bit of coloured pencil in some areas on top. I wanted to create a piece inspired by somewhere I have been. This is a view of a Cape Tribulation beach through the mangroves. I don’t love how it turned out, the colours look fab. I just feel like my work looks very amateurish when I paint still. Some of my simpler pieces look more professional, but this looks like a child painted it.

Perhaps I need to try some simpler pieces using the paint, like the style of artwork I have been creating using POSCA’s. This way, I can improve at using the brushes and mixing the colours before tackling more detailed stuff. Or maybe I should try more detailed pieces that are supposed to look more abstract. Still, lots of practising to do!
